Spanish Literary and Film Club: Discussing Bota blanca de tacón de aguja
This event has now finished.
Event details
This month's Tertulia de Literatura y Cine ‘Literary and Film Club’ will feature a discussion, conducted entirely in Spanish, of the short story Bota blanca de tacón de aguja (2022) by Spanish writer and journalist Mercedes de Pablos.
The Tertulia de Literatura y Cine series, run by María Muradás-Taylor in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science, offers participants an opportunity to take part in a guided discussion in Spanish. It explores social, historical, and political aspects of the Spanish-speaking world through the lens of literature and films, sometimes including a guest speaker.
Each event begins with a reading session (short stories or poetry) or the viewing of a film in Spanish. This is followed by a tutor-led discussion to stimulate audience interaction on the historical, political, and social realities linked to the stories.
The Tertulia is aimed at people currently studying Spanish at intermediate to advanced levels, as well as anyone who wishes to practise their Spanish.
The short story, Bota blanca de tacón de aguja ‘White boot with a stiletto heel’, centres on an apparently trivial boot that becomes the focus of an emotional crisis, serving as a tangible reminder of death, guilt, and the difficulty of resolving grief. The narrator reflects on the ties between objects and memory, exploring how memories often cling more tightly to material things than to the people who disappear.
Mercedes de Pablos (b. 1958) is a journalist and writer who has lived in Seville since 1978. She has dedicated her career to journalism, cultural management, and social research. She is the author of several non-fiction books, the novel Jonás, mapa para el buen traidor (2020), and the short story collection Ajuste de cuentos (2011).
