Abstract:

This presentation will focus on 3 main areas in the use of Language Analysis for the Determination of Origin (LADO). First, it looks into how LADO works and why adhering to the Language and National Origin Group’s Guidelines is essential in conducting effective LADO work. Second, the presentation will address the linguistic aspects of using LADO for Dari and Pashto languages, two of Afghanistan’s languages. Third, it will introduce the major experts’ in the development of LADO and will gloss over a number of methodologies for LADO including my own. Since 2006, Dr. Jawad Hassan Zadeh has used LADO in determining the origin of individuals whose national identity had been questioned due to a number of reasons including the use of language. He has been involved in LADO work for 20 years and has recently completed his M.A. in Applied and Forensic Linguistics at the Canterbury Christ Church University. To the present day, Dr. Zadeh has completed 350 LADO expert reports for cases from Afghanistan, Iran, Syria and Egypt."
