Event details
The political economy of emerging economies is marked by two defining features: rapid economic expansion and the diverse forms of mediation that shape local and transnational political and economic interests. This seminar explores these dynamics through the lens of new frontiers of accumulation in agriculture – land expansion, the development of trade and extractive infrastructure, or emerging forms of rent-seeking driven by financial speculation. A panel of three external speakers-- Dr Enrique Castañon (University College London), Dr Mihika Chatterjee (University of Bath) and Dr Valdemar João Wesz Jr. (Federal University of Latin American Integration, Brazil and visiting scholar, York)-- will discuss these themes drawing on their research in Asia and Latin America.
Bonus: The event will be followed by refreshments and a workshop from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm in the same room, to which you are also warmly invited. The workshop will include presentations by-- Dr Phil Roberts and Dr José Gutierres (University of York), Julia Rensi (Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil and PhD fellow at York), Julio Galindo (PhD in Politics) and Nikhil Feroze Ghosh (PhD in Environment).
This event is hybrid, please email igdc@york.ac.uk if you would like to join on Zoom.
