James Jarvis Memorial Bursary (Autumn 2022)

News | Posted on Monday 17 October 2022

Applications from current postgraduate students are now invited for the James Jarvis Memorial Bursary.

The James Jarvis Memorial Bursary was established in 2011 to create a lasting memorial to James, who was a History student at York from 2008 to 2011. James completed both his undergraduate and Master’s degrees here, and was an active member of a large number of York societies including the Medieval Society and the Lords of Misrule. His family are very proud of all he achieved and wanted to enable others to also benefit from studying at York. They decided to set up a bursary fund to assist postgraduate History students.

"James was a 'knight in shining armour' to so many people - the person everyone could rely on for help and support. James counted York as his home and his rampant enthusiasm for history and life meant that he lived them both to the full in his city. We wanted the memory of James, his achievements and what mattered to him to never be forgotten, so it seemed right to use his savings to start up a bursary in his name at the University of York.

Supporting others, through this bursary, is just continuing what James always did in life and means that at least some good will come out of his tragic accident and untimely death."

Application criteria

Grants will be made twice a year. The fund is available to support postgraduate students studying in the Department of History at York. All students are eligible to apply for funding with a preference for those who can demonstrate that they have made a contribution to the life of their university. Funds are disbursed twice a year and usually in the form of small grants of £100 to £200.

Applications can be made to support living costs, travel expenses for research and conferences or other research expenses. Priority is given to applications for research-related expenses (either travel or other costs) rather than living costs, but we are willing to consider applications for the latter. Please note, however, that living costs should relate to exceptional circumstances rather than day-to-day arrangements.

Timetable and application process

Deadline: 5.00pm on Wednesday 16 November 2022
