John specialises in Tudor history, and it was a student in his ‘Thomas More’ class who nominated John and gathered supporting evidence.
Named after the Society’s first female president, the Jinty Nelson Award recognises ‘outstanding and sustained commitment to supervision and in particular those who are inspiring the next generation of historians to excel’. The award cited John’s long track record in providing intellectual and pastoral support for PhD students and early career academics, and the very serious time and energy he commits in going above and beyond the normal call of supervisory duties.
