  • MA in History of Art (part-time)

What are your research interests / what are you working on?

"My research interests are history of art school education as well as process based art."

What modules have been most fascinating and why?

"The Bauhaus and Weimar Culture module was thoroughly enjoyable. My work led me to analyse cinematic representations of Neue Frau in photomontages by Marianne Brandt, which led to enjoyably watching a fair amount of glamourous 1920s American and German cinema."

What background do you come to HoA from and why HoA?

"I came to the course from a Fine Art background, having studied at Newcastle with three years out of art school as a practising artist: a career I have put on hold to complete my MA."

Why York rather than somewhere else?

"York has great connections and fantastically esteemed academics. Its such an inspiring location as well."

Do you find there’s a strong group atmosphere among the students?

"There is a strong sense of community visible in the exhibitions held at the Norman Rea Gallery, regular student theatre productions on campus, as well as the sports facilities available."

What’s the level of support like from staff and the department as a whole, are they receptive to feedback?

"Staff are encouraging and knowledgable. The regular meetings with supervisors during the course are invaluable."

What’s been your favourite study trip and why?

"The trip we took as part of the 2012 Tate module [The Art School Studio & Transformations in the Art Object. 1960-2010] to visit the Tate print rooms was fantastic. Having the opportunity to view amazing pop art works by Hockney and Hamilton so closely with insight from the staff there was a rewarding day out."

What do you feel is the most important thing you will take away from your experience at York?

"I’ve made some great connections with staff, peers and academics further afield. I have developed my research, writing and analytical skills, as well as a matured sense of self."

What would your dream job be?

"An absurdist romantic or an artist without seriousness!! Failing that, I would like to work as a curator, writer, researcher, art school tutor and a tourist."
