Antonio

  • From: Seoul, Korea
  • Studying: MA in History of Art (British Art) (full-time)

What background do you come to HoA from and why HoA?

"I graduated from an art college in Korea. I had a desire to learn more about the meanings and functions of art. That's why I came here to study art history."

Why York rather than somewhere else?

"York has a specific taught MA programme. I aim to teach the History of British Art, for it is less known in my country."

What are your research interests / what are you working on?

"I am planning to work on the stylistic change of a British artist at the turn of the nineteenth century and the twentieth century. And I am interested in Victorian paintings in general, which are often eclipsed by their French counterparts."

What modules have been most fascinating and why?

"All the modules exceeded my expectations. Among them, the module about Pre-Raphaelites was the most interesting and relevant for my future studies."

What’s been your favourite study trip and why?

"It's hard to say. But, the field trip for the Victorian sculpture module to London was the most interesting one because we gave presentations in public. That was a memorable event."

What’s the level of support like from staff and the department as a whole, are they receptive to feedback?

Yes. They are very supportive and encouraging.

How has your experience at York broadened your horizons as an art historian?

"People might think London is the best place to study art history, for it has more resources than anywhere else in the UK. However, York is also a great place to study art history because the great cities in the north such as Manchester, Liverpool and York itself have their own deep past and cultural heritages. I lived in London for a year. I found the city too noisy for studying at times. The ancient walls of York and its medieval buildings are also a good place to think."

Do you have an idea of how you’ll use your degree/plans for the future

"Acquiring knowledge in the humanities field enriches your life spiritually. This degree will give me the opportunity to become involved in creative jobs such as writing, translating and curatorial work."

What do you feel is the most important thing you will take away from your experience at York?

"Experiencing the English culture, acquiring valuable knowledge and skills and gaining invaluable friends."

What would your dream job be?

"Good question! An artist, a writer, a teacher and a scholar!"
