'Cubism and the Nineteenth Century'

Cubism is most often thought of as the great style of early-20th century modernity. It certainly provided the matrix for many of the century's later attempts to chart the feel of the modern metropolis. But how "modern" -- not to say, how futurist -- was Cubism's feelingfor space and scale? How much confined to a room? This lecture will address the ways Cubism belongs to a 19th-century past.
