York's Department of English and Related Literature has been ranked 6th in the UK, according to the latest Complete University Guide ranking (2023), moving up one place inside the UK’s top 10.
We have always been proud of the teaching and learning environment we foster at York, and of our community of staff and students that contribute.
Our astonishing array of staff expertise includes literature from the classical and medieval periods up to the 21st century, as well as global literature. York has been an important political, cultural, religious and trading centre since Roman times, providing us with a vibrant social and cultural foundation for literary study.
We are delighted to have the quality of our teaching and learning endorsed in this way.
York as a whole was ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the UK. A further eight departments are now ranked in the top 10 in the UK, including Archaeology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Theatre, Film, Television, and Interactive Media (TFTI), Language and Linguistic Science, History, and Social Work.
"This is another great result for York English, coming on the back of our strong recent performance in the Research Excellence Framework. York is such a wonderful place to study and to live – and it’s great to see that endorsed by the Complete University Guide!"
