York English in the UK Top Three

Posted on 28 September 2018

We are delighted to announce that the Department of English and Related Literature ranks at number 3 in the latest Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Rising four places from last year, the department has consolidated its reputation as one of the best places to study English in the UK, reflecting our passion for teaching, our world-leading research, and our dedication to the student experience.

Our wide-ranging degree course allows students to study everything from Old Norse to contemporary literature and film, and encourages students to expand their horizons, tackling diverse literary traditions, genres, and approaches. Reflecting on his degree, current second-year English student Sam Farr commented: 'Everything from sitting with staff, talking about an essay topic I had picked myself, to filming time lapses in the city for a group presentation, has led to a remarkable and unforgettable university experience'.

The league table is derived from official data from the Research Excellence Framework 2014, the Higher Education Statistics Agency and this year’s National Student Survey, and also takes into account factors such as graduate prospects and social inclusion.

English is one of nine departments at York to achieve top ten status.
