Prestigious Grants for Small Things

Posted on 8 May 2018

Congratulations to Dr Chloe Wigston Smith, who has been awarded two grants in support of her work on women and material entanglements in the Atlantic world.

Chloe has received the Mid Career Fellowship from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, along with the Mid Career Research Fellowship from the British Academy, allowing her to develop an important new project that thinks about women’s interactions with objects in the eighteenth century, and how these engagements influenced the literary culture of the age. In particular, Chloe is interested in the literary effects of ‘small things’ which often take on a big significance, and shed new light on gendered relationships and the artefacts of empire.

The project also extends Chloe’s recent work on The Story of Things, an exciting collaboration with schools and Fairfax House. Chloe has developed a number of educational resources, offering school-age children the chance to re-imagine the world around them.
