English student selected as Laidlaw Leadership Fellow

Posted on 10 May 2018

Congratulations to first-year English student, Matthew Bantick, who has been selected for the highly competitive Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship.

During the summer of his first and second years, Matthew will undertake independent research, mentored by the Head of Department, Professor Helen Smith.

His research project will explore the presentation of autism in literature, analysing depictions to evaluate their accuracy and utility. Matthew will investigate both the use of these books in bibliotherapy and their utility in informing readers about the condition, and he will engage with the York community to gain a variety of perspectives.

The project will culminate in a series of talks in summer 2019 relating to the subject, and connected to the department's prestigious Writers at York scheme.

See the Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship web page for further infomation about the scheme.
