Go on a coastal adventure with 'The Snail and the Whale'

Posted on 10 August 2018

Alexander Smith, a third-year undergraduate student in the Department of English and Related Literature, has just completed an exciting internship with the Marine Management Organisation.

Part of his work has involved an exciting collaboration with Natural England and Macmillan Children’s Books to create and promote a campaign inspired by the children’s classic The Snail and the Whale, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler; author and illustrator of other world famous books, including The Gruffalo.

To celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of The Snail and the Whale, families are encouraged to go on their own marine adventures with a brand new Coastal Adventure Booklet, containing fascinating facts about the marine wildlife you can find in England’s seas, fun colouring activities and puzzles, all accompanied by the iconic illustrations of the original story.

Author Julia Donaldson commented: “I am delighted that fifteen years after Axel and I created The Snail and the Whale our story continues to encourage young readers to get out and engage with nature and the world around them. I hope that children exploring the England Coast Path can gaze “at the sky, the sea, the land, the waves and the caves and the golden sand” and be just as amazed as the snail.”

Congratulations to Alexander on a rewarding internship and an inspiring collaboration.
