Recent York graduate wins prestigious Ertegun scholarship

Laura Hulley, who graduated from York with a starred first in 2010, has been selected as one of the inaugural cohort of Ertegun Scholars for postgraduate study at Oxford.

The programme was established by Mica and Ahmet Ertegun (a famous interior designer and the founder of Atlantic Records), and their £26 million gift is the largest donation for Humanities students in Oxford's 900-year history. Laura is among the first group of fifteen Ertegun Scholars, who will not only receive a full scholarship but will have the exclusive use of the Mica and Ahmet Ertegun House for the Study of the Humanities (a Georgian building in the heart of Oxford) and regular contact with the full-time Ertegun Senior Scholar in Residence. She will pursue the M.St. in English Studies, focusing on the Renaissance period.

'I'm excited and humbled by the prospect of becoming an inaugural Ertegun Scholar,' Laura says. 'It was at York that I was encouraged, by my outstanding tutors and supervisor in the English department, to pursue interdisciplinary research. This award is a testament to the brilliant members of staff who were unswervingly supportive throughout my undergraduate career, and indeed to the university as a whole.'
