PhD studentships for doctoral research starting in September 2026

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funds outstanding original research across the Arts and Humanities.
The Wolfson Foundation funds outstanding research that demonstrates the potential to make an impact on a chosen field in three areas: History, Literature and Languages.
To be eligible to apply for AHRC funding in the Department of English and Related Literature, applicants must have applied for and received an offer of a PhD place for a September 2026 start, either on our PhD in English or on our PhD in English with Creative Writing.
To be eligible to apply for Wolfson funding in the Department of English and Related Literature, applicants must have applied for, and ideally be in receipt of, an offer of a PhD place on our PhD in English for September 2026 start.

If you would like to apply for these funding opportunities, you are advised to submit your application for a PhD place by the beginning of December. That will allow time for interview for the PhD place, and for feedback on your funding application(s) thereafter.

Applicants who want to apply for both AHRC and Wolfson funding are welcome to do so but need to submit an application form for each funding scheme.
The application window for these funding schemes runs from Monday 27 October 2025 to Wednesday 21 January 2026.
