Research and collaboration in mathematics

Mathematics at the frontiers of discovery and impact.

Our vision is to conduct world-leading mathematical research, advancing the development of mathematics itself and generating benefit for society and industry.

We provide an excellent environment for research and impact, in which researchers at all stages can thrive and develop.

We have extensive collaborations with mathematicians worldwide and actively pursue interdisciplinary research in many fields.

Research strengths

We pride ourselves on the lack of boundaries between subject areas, which encourages a culture of collaboration in our department. Our main areas of strength are represented in eight research groups.

Impact and engagement

Although the impact of mathematics is often indirect and tends to be long-term, our research has had significant impact in many ways.

We create the potential for further research impact by facilitating connections and ideas exchange across the University and with industrial partners and policymakers.

We have built strong collaborative relationships with diverse organisations such as Fera Science, Unilever, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science and the Office for National Statistics.

Highlights

Collaboration with business and industry

We engage widely with organizations outside academia, including business and industry partners, professional bodies, and national and international agencies.
