Stefano Pirandola, professor of Quantum Computing in the Department of Computer Science, has been awarded the IET Achievement Medal in Quantum Technology.

Awarded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the award recognises researchers who have made an exceptional contribution in the field of engineering, technology and science through research, leadership and enterprise.

Recognition

Professor Stefano Pirandola received the medal in recognition of his work in communication rates for quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation and entanglement distribution. His groundbreaking research has set the theoretical limits for quantum communications, with applications to quantum security, repeaters and networks.

He said: "I’m deeply honoured to receive the IET Achievement Medal in Quantum Technology. It is a privilege to be recognised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for my contributions to quantum communications.

This recognition underscores the importance of advancing quantum technologies and reflects the collective effort of my collaborators and colleagues who share the vision of building next-generation quantum networks."

Impactful products

Commenting on the medal, Iain Bate, Head of the Department of Computer Science said: “Stefano has been working at the forefront of quantum communications for some period of time. His research is setting new standards setting the limits of what is currently achievable.

Through his company, he is commercialising this work into impactful products. This is then feeding back into the classrooms with the students he teaches getting to use technology that few have access to. This award is very well deserved.”

IET President Dawn Ohlson said: “We’re proud to celebrate these outstanding individuals and their impact with our Achievement Awards. Each has demonstrated excellence in their field and made significant contributions as trailblazers to the sector.

From our distinguished medallists to our exceptional apprentice and technician winners, their accomplishments reflect the very best of our profession and they are remarkable role models for the next generation.”
