Meet the Researchers Event

Posted on 20 June 2013

A new event to promote interaction between our undergraduate and postgraduate Chemistry students was hosted in the Department

Inspired by an idea from one of our postgraduate students, Kate Horner, the Department of Chemistry hosted the first ‘Meet the Researchers’ event on Wednesday 19 June. The event was aimed at providing our undergraduates with an insight into life as a postgraduate student and how to go about applying for a PhD Studentship.

Following an introduction by Professor Richard Taylor (Head of Department), Dr Andy Parsons provided an overview of our exciting new building programme and the diverse range of research expertise at York. This was followed by three entertaining and inspirational talks by postgraduate research students:

  • Conversion of Kate into a Quantum Chemist, by Kate Horner
  • The Many Hats of a Chemistry PhD, by Dan Cornwell
  • YorCat and C–C Activation, by Julia Sarju

Around 90 students attended the event, which was followed by a lively and popular poster session.

Finally, students and staff attended a BBQ organised by our undergraduate student society, ChemSoc, together with our departmental Chemical InterActions Society.

Kate noted, "I'm thrilled that so many of our undergraduates came to the event. It was a wonderful opportunity to share our enthusiasm with the next generation and to make cutting edge research more accessible."
