Members of the Department are closely involved with many other initiatives based in York, including the production of the successful sixth-form magazine, Chemistry Review (for which we provide the Editor-in-Chief and editorial staff) and the Chemical Industries Education Centre (the latter of which is based in the Department). The Department is very active in Outreach activities for schools and the public.
In September 2003, the Department's Science Education Group, led by Professor John Holman and Miranda Stephenson in collaboration with the White Rose University Consortium, was successful in its bid to establish the National Science Learning Centre at York. The National Science Learning Centre is a joint venture with the White Rose University Consortium of Leeds, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam and York. This £25m project is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is at the heart of a national network of Science Learning Centres which focuses on the professional development of science teachers, seeking to transform the quality of science teaching in the UK.
