Event details

Barts Health NHS Trust data reveals an alarming year on year increase in the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart attacks and strokes across our population in North East London (NEL).  At the same time, the unit cost of treating these patients is also rising annually, compounded by a growing and ageing population, living in relatively greater deprivation and with more complexity and comorbidities such as diabetes.

Importantly, CVD is largely preventable. The NHS long term Plan states that “CVD is the biggest area where the NHS can save lives over 10 years”. Local initiatives such as the Barts Health NHS Trust East London Cardiovascular Prevention Programme (ELoPe) have demonstrated significant improvements in surrogate outcomes for CVD with minimal resource. There is now a moral and economic imperative for Barts Health NHS Trust and the wider system to rethink funding models and invest at scale into CVD prevention and health promotion across NEL.

This paper presents new data insights from the Barts Health NHS Trust data dashboard on the burden of CVD and the potential preventive opportunities that could begin to offset this impact in the short to medium term.
