Abstract:
Barts Health Trust (BH) has one of the largest blood transfusion services in the country, administering over 65,000 units to around 15,000 patients per year. Blood transfusions are common procedures and can be a life-saving intervention for a range of conditions such as severe blood loss from trauma, certain heart conditions, and various blood disorders. Errors in blood transfusions such as administration of the incorrect blood component or mislabelling group and screen (G&S) samples are the leading causes of transfusion-related adverse events. These errors are often attributable to the complexity of manual transfusion processes and can have severe consequences. To improve the safety and efficiency of blood transfusion practice, BH introduced the Bedside Electronic Transfusion Checks (BETC) to replace the manual steps of blood transfusion services at 4 BH hospitals. An evaluation study was conducted alongside the BETC implementation. The evaluation period is 3 years in total including a 12-month pre-implementation phase (May 2022 to April 2023) and a 24-month implementation phase (May 2023 to April 2025). The BETC roll-out was at hospital ward level, adopted a non-randomised, staggered, multi- phase design. Data were collected at per blood transfusion level from multiple sources, including the electronic transfusion datasets, process mapping dataset, and Health Economics Inventory dataset. Yan will present the overall evaluation study with a focus on modelling the G&S rejection as a result of mislabelled samples.
