AAIP is delighted to endorse the new guidelines to improve the guidelines for clinical trial protocols and clinical trial reports

The Assuring Autonomy International Programme (AAIP) is delighted to endorse the recently published SPIRIT-AI and CONSORT-AI guidelines, having been part of the development process.

"We have already seen remarkable progress in the use of AI in healthcare and in time AI will transform the way we care for patients," said AAIP's Dr Ibrahim Habli, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York.

"However, we must not put technological progress above safety, which is why the SPIRIT-AI and CONSORT-AI guidelines are so important. Improving the guidelines for clinical trial protocols and clinical trial reports will increase transparency, enabling those who are governing, regulating and using incoming AI-based tools and systems to clearly and critically appraise the information presented."

The guidelines are particularly strong in light of the global and interdisciplinary approach taken in their development. Bringing together methodologists, statisticians, healthcare professionals, computer scientists, industry representatives, journal editors, policy-makers, health informaticists, experts in law and ethics, regulators, patients and funders to develop the guidelines ensures they are readable and usable by all.
