Health Economics for Policy Impact

Health Economics for Policy Impact (HEPI) is a three-year research infrastructure project funded by the European Commission (EC) which aims to empower individuals and institutions across East and West Africa to address urgent health challenges and improve population health outcomes.

Researchers at the University of York are working with partners at the University of Bergen, Norway, East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community and the East African Community, together with partner institutions across Africa: Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Malawi), Makerere School of Public Health (Uganda), Muhimbili University of Health & Allied Sciences (Tanzania), Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal), University of Ghana, and the West African Health Organisation (Burkina Faso).

The project aims to facilitate future expansion of health economics through optimising existing research infrastructures in Europe and Africa in response to the resolutions on financing expressed by African countries in the 2019 African Leadership Meeting (ALM) Investing in Health Declaration, which recognised that sustainable economic growth in Africa relies on investments in health. HEPI has four main objectives:

  1. Strengthening relationships between research and policy making in health economics and financing, to inform evidence-based decision making;
  2. Facilitating improved use of health economics data for research and policy development;
  3. Building training capacity in health economics at higher education institutions, in alignment with local healthcare needs;
  4. Enhancing the capability of individual researchers and policymakers in health economics, with a particular focus on addressing gender disparities and empowering female researchers in member countries.
