Internship opportunity: Responsible Futures

Three ESAY internships offered by Environmental Sustainability at York (ESAY) are available to support the University of York and YUSU to deliver the Responsible Futures programme. Responsible Futures is administered by Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS) UK and is a whole-institution approach to embedding holistic sustainability across the formal and informal curriculum. Responsible Futures provides a framework to assist in creating an environment for staff and students to work together to embed sustainability into teaching and learning. 

The role

The ESAY intern will work in a team to support the mainstreaming of climate and environmental sustainability education. The internship will involve auditing the existing curriculum and organising and supporting events on campus to support climate education in the institution. This role will be a hybrid mix of in person and remote work. 

The ESAY interns will be supervised by Lynda Dunlop, Director of Education for ESAY, and will work closely with Anna Morfitt (ESAY Communications Officer), Daisy Kemp (ESAY Project Manager) and Felicity Palmer (YUSU Sustainability Coordinator).

The intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in training on climate change and environmental sustainability.
  • Gain a broader and deeper knowledge of current higher education practice.
  • Conduct a systematic mapping and auditing exercise and develop associated research skills.
  • Become acquainted with good practice in mainstreaming climate change in higher education.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Deepen their knowledge of climate and environmental education.
  • Develop written and oral communication skills.
  • Enhance organisation, interpretation and reporting skills.

Personal specification

  • Willingness to engage with staff and students on campus (essential)
  • Good teamwork skills and an ability to collaborate on a task (essential)
  • Organisation skills and the ability to collect, collate and present information (essential)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken form (essential)
  • An interest in taking action on climate change (essential)
  • An interest in environmental and social sustainability (essential)
