Digging deep: A week of discovery and dialogue on geothermal energy

Published on 23 October 2025

Hear about our recent geothermal events as part of York Environment Festival and World Geothermal Energy Day, 15 - 17 October.

We were delighted to host a range of geothermal events as part of York Environment Festival and World Geothermal Energy Day last week. From our interactive drop-in sessions to an evening public lecture, it was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm for geothermal energy and its potential for York’s sustainable future.

One of the highlights of the week was our evening public lecture, featuring guest speaker Professor Jon Gluyas from Durham University, who shared insights into the science behind geothermal energy. We also heard from Paul Bushnell, Project Lead for our own geothermal initiative, who spoke about York’s pioneering efforts to harness heat from beneath our feet.

We were delighted to welcome Rachael Maskell MP, who attended the lecture, visited our exhibition in the Ron Cooke Hub, and shared her support for the project.

Rachael Maskell said:

"I really enjoyed visiting the Geothermal drop in and learning about York’s new heating source and how this ground breaking project provides sustainability and opportunity for our city. Drawing on the earth’s natural heat, the first phase of the project aims to heat university buildings, with the hope that it could have wider use in the future."

Throughout the week, our team also hosted drop-in sessions at Tang Hall library, York Explore Library, and on campus, giving visitors the chance to learn more about geothermal energy, ask questions, and take part in hands-on activities.

What’s next

As the next step in the geothermal project, we’re working with our specialist partner Echo Geo to carry out a seismic survey on Campus East and surrounding areas between 27 October and 16 November 2025. This survey will help us better understand the geology beneath the ground and guide the next stages of the project.
