Community and events

Information, updates and upcoming events for our local community.

As part of the geothermal project, we are engaging with local communities, researchers, and educators to explore opportunities for involvement, including knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and community outreach.

Find out how we've been engaging so far, and how you can get involved in upcoming events and activities.

How we're engaging

On 17 October, we organised an evening public talk to explore the science, opportunities and impact of deep geothermal energy. Speakers included Professor Jon Gluyas from Durham University and Paul Bushnell, UoY Geothermal Scheme Project Lead. Watch the full lecture on YouTube.
We hosted several geothermal open days as part of York Environment Festival from 15 to 17 October. These sessions offered an opportunity for people to come and find out about geothermal energy, chat to our team, and take part in interactive geothermal activities. Sessions were hosted at Tang Hall Library, York Explore Library, and on campus.
On 11 June, we delivered our first Open Day on Campus East in collaboration with Echo Geo, our seismic survey delivery partners. The event saw 60+ attendees who came to find out more about the project and hear about the seismic surveys planned for later in 2025.
In June 2025, we presented at the UK Geothermal Task Force, and supported Salix as a guest speaker at the EAUC Conference to help raise the profile of the project nationally.
In July, we delivered our first geothermal research workshop. This brought together UoY researchers to explore research opportunities aligned to the geothermal project, which will support the development of a University of York research vision and help shape future external investment.
