The Department has research council funding to allocate to the PhD projects which can be seen on our research project pages.  Applicants are advised to apply for these positions early in the year of entry.

Projects with specific funding will be advertised on this page.  We also welcome applications from students who can provide their own funding.

Independent research fellowships

The department strongly encourages applications (from external or internal candidates whose research interests have an overlap with those of the department) for independent research fellowships to be held at York. (We have an exceptional record in facilitating holders of these fellowships to move into permanent academic posts in the department.) Potential applicants should check the eligibility criteria and closing dates carefully and contact the department (either the Chair of the Research Committee, Professor Howard Wilson (howard.wilson@york.ac.uk), or the most relevant member of academic staff) with a draft proposal.

We hold an full-day Independent Research Fellows Recruitment Event every summer, for outstanding researchers from across the spectrum of physics who hold (or are considering holding) independent fellowships. Those attending tour our facilities, meet our academic and research staff and learn what support we can offer for scientific and career plans. Selected applicants are invited to give presentations on their work.Next year's Independent Research Fellows Recruitment Event will be in mid-July 2012.   Details will be available in the Events section of this site.
