The Library is open access, which means that anyone can come in and use our printed and online resources. You can also purchase a photocopying card which you can use for the self service photocopier.
You can use the Library Catalogue PCs in the Library to search for books, journals and microfilms held by the Library. There are some of these PCs on each floor. You can also search the Library Catalogue from your home PC. The Catalogue includes a Help function which will take you through the steps to find an item, including where to look on the shelves. If you have difficulty working out the shelf locations there is information to help you on the Library's website.
You can access most of our electronic resources free of charge on the Library premises, as long as they are used for educational purposes, using our walk-in access PC.
If you are part of a school group and would like to organise a tour of the Library, please contact Tony Wilson to see what we can do for you. If you're an individual, please don't hesitate to come by yourself and use the Library to help you with your homework.
If you're a school group who would like to use the Borthwick Institute, please contact Amanda Jones to arrange a visit.
If you are using the Library for research you can ask about joining the Library for a fee, if you can demonstrate the need to use it. For more information, please contact us. Don't forget, you can also use the Borthwick Institute for the Archives, in the same building, which has considerable resources on local and familial history as well as other interesting information such as nineteenth and twentieth century social records and York history.
If you are a student from another university you can come and use our resources, but if you would like to take books out you must apply to your home university library for a SCONUL Access card. For more information please see our SCONUL web page.
