We have a growing collection of over 3,500 audiovisual materials in the Audiovisual Room on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library. The collection includes DVDs, videos, CDs and audio tapes. The DVD cases are shelved in the Audiovisual Room to enable browsing but the discs are kept at Lending Services. They are kept at Lending Services at the request of the departments who buy them for teaching and research and who are concerned about security.
A wide variety of subjects is covered by the collection including Shakespeare productions, seminal films and documentaries, to support courses in the Departments of English and TFTV. Other topics include language teaching and music.
You can find what we have by searching the Library Catalogue. If you want to search only the audiovisual collection you can select Library Collections and then University of York Audiovisual. You can also use this quick link.
To browse the whole DVD collection you can go the Audiovisual search and type DVD as a Word(s) anywhere search. The list will be sorted by date with the most recent at the top. You can resort the results by author or title.
This collection of commercial recordings presently includes over 800 compact discs, representing the full ECM catalogue.
The finest producers of re-mastered archival sound material and are important for anyone studying the history of recording or the history of performance practice. The Bel Canto collection is slightly more focused on vocal recordings.
Persons using the Pearl and Bel Canto recordings may also be interested in the holdings of the University of York Sound Archives (UYSA).
There is a variety of equipment in the Audiovisual Room, including various DVD and video players, a DAB radio, a record player, a cassette player, and a CD player.
There are headphones in the Audiovisual Room but better quality ones can be borrowed from Lending Services.
You can borrow items from the collection. How many items and for how long? tells you how many items you can borrow and how long you can keep them for. You can book DVDs and videos in advance.
The DVD discs are kept at Lending Services. To borrow a DVD take the case to Lending Services where the staff will add the disc(s) and issue the item to you.
If you are an academic requiring DVDs for teaching or are a designated screening assistant (usually postgraduate students), you may borrow DVDs for up to a week. For the English and TFTV departments, we have a list of the relevant users but other academics will need to give advance warning. Please email libr10@york.ac.uk or ring Sarah Thompson on 01904 324515 or Paula Mountain Agar on 01904 323874.
Book the DVD for the day you need to borrow it (a booking lapses after 13:00 and after that anyone else may borrow the DVD) and when you bring the case to Lending Services, tell the library assistant how long you will need it for. It is helpful to let the students on your module know that you will be borrowing the DVD for a longer period so that they will not try to book it and be disappointed. Normally you may borrow up to 3 DVDs at any one time.
There are some DVDs which are designated as "For Use in the Library only", but which may be borrowed for teaching purposes. Please give advance warning if you are not members of English or TFTV. These DVDs cannot be booked because they are normally non-borrowable. Take the case to Lending Services and tell the library assistant how long you will need it.
We have a small number of CD-ROMs which we can't put on the university network and which we can't lend. The Collection on the Library Catalogue is Lending Services - CD-ROM.
Ask for these at the JB Morrell Library Key Texts desk. You can use them on the specified PC in the Compact Store corridor.
CD-ROMs which come with books are kept inside the book and can be borrowed with the book. Please report any problems with the CD-ROMs when you return the book.
