History of Art Alumni

Welcome back!

Welcome back to the Department of History of Art!

The Department of History of Art is moving through an exciting phase of growth and development. As the Department continues to expand, we are keen to develop the involvement of our alumni. To this end, we have launched these alumni web pages, which we hope will act as a platform via which alumni can share news and get involved in department events.

Have you joined YorkSpace?

We’d really like to hear from any former members of the department. If you have news you would like to share on this website, or just want to get in touch and join the alumni mailing list, please contact Susanna Broom.

21st June 2013

We would also like to invite alumni to an informal drinks reception in York on Friday 21 June. The event will take place from 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the Norman Rea Gallery in Derwent College (formally Langwith College). This event is timed to coincide with the university's Anniversary Celebration Weekend 2013, which sees alumni, retired staff and guests invited to take part in a range of seminars, debates, masterclasses, tours and social events on campus, and in the city. The weekend also coincides with the York Festival of Ideas, so there is something for everyone!

The department's event is free to attend, but you are requested to register online here.

We post details of alumni-specific events here as they arise, and we'd welcome suggestions from our alumni for events they would enjoy attending, or details of events they might be willing to host (please e-mail Susanna Broom to discuss your ideas).

You can also find details of upcoming departmental events on our departmental news and events pages. Alumni are always welcome to join us at these too!

Past events

1st December 2012

The department held its second winter alumni event in York on 1st December. The event, which took place at York Art Gallery, saw alumni catching up with tutors and meeting current students, as well as catching up with eachother. Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to join us for what was a very enjoyable evening - we hope you enjoyed it too!

13th June 2012

After the success of the event at York Art Gallery in December, the Department held it's inaugural alumni event in London on 13th June, at Proud Gallery, Chelsea. The space is owned and run by York alumnus Alex Proud and, over the last ten years, Proud Galleries has become Europe’s most popular privately funded photographic gallery - a big 'thank you' must be sent to Alex and his team for their kind hospitality.

Colleagues and PhD students from the Department welcomed a number of alumni, and were very interested to hear about the diverse range of career paths our alumni are taking. Head of Department, Mark Hallett, gave a short update on departmental developments, and an outline of how we hope the department's alumni network will develop and grow over the coming months and years.

3rd December 2011

The department held it's first alumni event just before Christmas, at York Art Gallery. A number of alumni braved the elements and enjoyed a drinks reception at the gallery (including a private view of the gallery's William Etty: Art and Controversy exhibition), and the opportunity to catch up with old friends, and former tutors.

Didn't hear about this event? Please make sure you're signed up to receive updates from YorkSpace, via which the Development and Alumni Office issues invitations for alumni events.

Alumni talks

In time, we’re hoping to develop a series of alumni talks for our undergraduate students. If you’d like to come and let our current students know what history of art did for you, then please get in touch with Susanna Broom.

  • Lara Goodband, who gained her BA in English and History of Art from York, and now works as a freelance curator.
  • Laura Layfield who followed up her BA in History of Art from York with an MA by Research, and now works at the Bowes Museum, County Durham.
