Generating media coverage

The media is more diverse now than it has ever been and that offers the University a wide range of opportunities for raising its profile. Beyond the mainstream media of broadcast and print, there are a host of websites catering for niche audiences and particular interests. There is also increasing international attention on what is happening at the University of York.

We can help to produce specialist, national and international media coverage for a range of activities including:

  • research findings
  • new research awards
  • staff and student awards and achievements
  • new teaching programmes and other initiatives
  • work with the York community
  • events, conferences and visitors

Media coverage can be part of a wider campaign, which can involve publications, events and websites. Talk to our colleagues in the Communications team for help in any of these areas.

How we can help you

We draft all University press releases, record podcasts, take pictures, produce statements and generate web pages for the media. We also offer advice on how you should approach interviews with journalists to ensure you get your message across accurately, concisely and with impact.

If you have a story

  1. Phone, email or visit the Press Office team to discuss a media release
  2. A press officer will talk with you to gain background material
  3. We will draft your press release and send it to you to check
  4. The final version of the release will be signed off by the Director of Communications
  5. We prepare a distribution list tailored to your release
  6. The release is distributed to media outlets and displayed on the University homepage

How you can help us

Contact us at the earliest possible stage of your story, even if you’re uncertain about whether your research or event might interest the media.

Think about pictures: interesting images, video or sound are just as effective at attracting media attention as words on a page. Try to have a good selection of high resolution images ready.

ISDN line

Within the Press Office we have an ISDN line for broadcast-quality radio interviews, which eliminates the need for staff to travel to radio stations either in York or further afield. The line is available for use during normal office hours, and outside those times by special arrangement. Training on the use of the line is provided.

If you're a member of staff who would like to use the ISDN line, please contact the Press Office on 01904 432029 to check availability.
