York Extra is the the University's online internal news system.
All University staff and students have access to York Extra, but a student or member of staff will only see messages that have been targeted at them. When each message is added to the system, the provider is asked to select the audience group for the message - this is based on a variety of categories including, for example, department/section or unit, category of staff (ie academic, support, research, technical), postgraduate student, undergraduate student and year of study.
York Extra has a number of channels in which news items are displayed. Staff and students are automatically subscribed to the Announcements, Community and Events channels, but may choose to opt out of the last two. You may also subscribe to any channel, but you will only see messages intended for your viewing. Each department has its own channel.
The [Channels] link lets you choose which channels to subscribe to. In addition you can set channels to be open (displaying message summaries) or closed when the York Extra web viewer is started, and you can hide channels when they have no messages. Please note that the facility to open and close channels is only available on modern web browsers with JavaScript enabled. For other browsers the channels are always open.
