What should I bring?

Before you take your seat you will be instructed to remove any outdoor wear (eg coats, hats or scarves). You will not be permitted to wear outdoor clothing at your desk, or have these items on the back of your seat. Invigilators will instruct students to remove any outdoor clothing - please be prepared for this and dress accordingly. 

You will also be instructed to leave any bags in the designated area. This is usually just outside the examination room or at the back of the room if space permits. These areas will be not be supervised  and, as such, items are left at students' own risk. The University strongly advises that you do not bring any items to your examination that you are not happy to leave unattended. Small items such as purses or keys can be placed on the floor under your chair. There are lockers around the campus that you can use.

What should I bring with me to an exam?

Calculators

Students are encouraged to provide their own calculators for closed examinations. The calculator brought to the exam must be one of those on the list approved by the exams office.

 Bringing a calculator which is not on the approved list, unless specifically authorised for that examination, will be considered a breach of the rules of that examination.

The Examinations Office will provide a standard calculator (Casio FX-85GTPLUS) that is distributed to those students for whom a calculator is necessary in the completion of particular examination papers and where the student does not bring their own.

Your University card

You are required by University regulations to display your University card in all examinations. The card must be clear, legible and free from defacement.

You must display your University card (with the photo facing upwards) on your desk throughout all examinations. If you keep your University card in a wallet, please remove the card from the wallet before placing it on your desk. The wallet must be put in the plastic bag under your desk.

If you fail to take your University card to your examination you will be required to present it, along with one other form of photographic ID, to your department within one working day of your examination. Failure to do so may result in your examination script not being marked.  

If you have lost your University card please obtain a replacement immediately from the Information Centre. If you think you may have left your University card in a previous examination please also visit the Information Centre, as any cards handed in will be sent there. 

Water

You are only allowed to bring a small, clear bottle of still water (nothing greater than 500 ml). 

Stationery

You should bring pens, pencils, a ruler, a pencil sharpener and an eraser. Correction fluid/tape is not permitted. Stationery items should be placed loose on your examination desk, or in a transparent pencil case that invigilators can clearly see the contents of. Invigilators may check your pencil case and/or stationery items at any point.

Spare stationery items will not be available to borrow from invigilators.

What should I not bring with me to an exam?

Food and drink

You are not allowed to bring food and drink into an exam. This includes:

  • Hot drinks
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Large bottles of water (nothing greater than 500 ml) 
  • Food - including sweets and mints

A mobile phone

You are not allowed to leave a mobile phone in your pocket. This is considered academic misconduct and will be investigated. You will be asked to switch off your mobile phone and place it under your chair.

Electronic devices

You are not allowed to bring smart watches, electronic dictionaries, bluetooth devices, iPods, mp3 players, or any other device capable of storing or accessing data into an exam.

Dictionaries

  • Dictionaries are not permitted in any examination.

Revision material

You must not bring revision material into an exam - unless you are sitting an 'open book exam'. In open book exams you may be allowed to bring in notes and/or text books. The department will notify you when this is permitted for a particular exam.
