Age is one of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. The Act provides protection against discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of age.
For a summary of the key legislation, see the Equality Challenge Unit guidance: Age: key legislation.
The Default Retirement Age was removed with effect from 1 October 2011. It is no longer legal to maintain a default retirement age and contracts of employment which contain such a clause requiring retirement at a certain age will no longer be enforceable.
Policies: The University's Equality and Diversity Policy for Students and the Equality and Diversity Policy in Employment set out the University's commitment to ensuring that all staff and students are treated fairly and with dignity and respect whatever their age.
HR Policies in support of age equality: The University is committed to supporting a diverse workforce. The policy and guidelines on retirement reflect the removal of the Default Retirement Age. Advice on Pensions is available to all staff within the pensions scheme.
Policies in support of mature students: In recent years about 13% of new students to the University have been mature students. In some departments the proportion is much higher. Mature students come to the University from a wide range of backgrounds with qualifications ranging from conventional 'A' levels to Access and Foundation courses.
The University welcomes applications from mature students and has developed a range of initiatives to facilitate return to learning and to support students with families. This includes providing appropriate accommodation, guidance on financial support and careers advice specific to mature students. The work across the University is supported by departmental and student-led initiatives such as the Mature Students' Association.
In support of young people under the age of 18: the University has a duty of care to its students who are under 18 years of age which is outlined in its Safeguarding guidelines and Guidelines on accommodation.
