The challenge

Design a contraption using ONLY household materials to protect a raw egg from a high fall (like an upstairs window if you have one, or just from as high as you can reach). You’re not allowed to use anything battery powered, and there are many ways you can make this work - try to research online as well as coming up with your own ideas!

Top tips

  • Make sure there’s something to cushion the egg and act as a shock absorber - straws can be good for this.
  • Decrease the velocity - designing a parachute could work.
  • Orientate the egg so it lands on the strongest part of the shell.

The result

Once everyone who is taking part has made their contraptions, make sure you’ve taken a picture and written everyone’s name on them. Then, have one person drop the eggs from the same height (this makes it a fair test). Carefully inspect your contraption and record whose egg has survived - they are the winner!
