Trial new ways of reward and recognition
A thriving work environment is not just about knowledge and skills but about how we work together. Our staff community is the foundation of all the successes marked in our REF and TEF results and in so many other ways. So building a shared view of how we work well together, including the behaviours we value, is the key to our continued success in the future. This Community without Limits framework was created by our staff, in their words, and sets out behaviours which we can all get behind.

360 Degree Feedback
Are you a University of York colleague who manages people or leads a research project? We have the perfect opportunity for you to accelerate your career development!
🔄360 degree feedback allows you to understand how the people around you - your own manager, colleagues and those who report to you - see you.
📜You’ll receive a report that will showcase your strengths and offer suggestions for your development. You will also have time with a trained and experienced coach to help you understand what the report means for you and help you make the most of your feedback.
Any University of York colleague who manages people in a research or research enabling role can take part. This could be in a formal line management role or informal project leadership.
360 Degree Feedback - become a coach
Linked to the 360 feedback programme we are trialling, we also have the opportunity for a small number of people to receive training on coaching and supporting the managers in receiving their 360 degree report.
What would this involve for you?
🖊️All the administration will be handled at our end, so you don’t need to worry about gathering the feedback from their colleagues.
⌚A one-day training session to upskill you in supporting managers to interpret and take action on their 360 report.
📖 You’ll be trained in reading over their 360 report with them (which contains feedback from across their team including direct reports, line managers, and colleagues) and provide support in both interpreting responses and discussing next steps.
🎇This might involve empowering someone to push themselves in their role, or even having difficult conversations around team dynamics. No matter what the report shows, you’ll be confident in addressing these areas and providing practical support to the person receiving their 360 feedback report.
⌛ All you need to contribute is around 12-16 hours to debrief 6-8 managers on their results
📜This is a great development opportunity to add to your CV by advancing your communication, interpersonal, and reflection skills - as well as supporting others’ development.
If you’re employed by us at University of York and have already trained with us to be a coach or mentor as part of one of our in house schemes, you are eligible to apply.
Your Community Without Limits Self Profiling Tool
As part of the Valuing Voices development opportunities for researchers and research-enablers at The University of York, we are offering you the opportunity to use the Your Community Without Limits Self Profiling Tool.
This is a brand new tool based around the Community Without Limits Framework.
🖊️You complete the self-profiler by yourself and receive a report that identifies areas of growth that will directly support you to become more effective in your role or make the next step in your career journey.
📜Your report is completely confidential but can be a useful foundation for discussions with your line manager in one to one meetings and Professional Development Reviews (PDRs) to explore steps for development.
We are opening this initial trial opportunity to only 50 University of York colleagues, and your feedback will be used to inform a rollout to colleagues more widely across the university.
Team Development Profiles
📣Calling all research teams! We have a fantastic opportunity to bring new energy and focus to how you work together in 2026 and beyond!
You might be a brand new team, had some staff changes or you've been working together for a while and feel you need a bit of a boost. That’s where the profile from Team Management Systems (TMS Development International Ltd, TMSDI) comes in!
Your TMSDI Team Profile highlights strengths, work preferences and team dynamics based on research into the qualities common to high-performing teams.
How does it work?
❔Everyone in the team completes a questionnaire
📜You receive your individual report
💪A trained facilitator from the Valuing Voices Team leads an interactive team day to share the parts you wish to share from your team profile so you can see where your team strengths, preferences and gaps are
👣Leave with a plan for how you can work together more effectively
🙂Be a happier and more productive team!
🪴Sidenote: As a Living Lab, the Valuing Voices team have tried this ourselves and it's changed how we function as a team. Read our Living Lab Reflection.
⌛How much time do we need to commit?
Approximately 30 minutes to complete your questionnaire
30-60 minutes to review and reflect on your individual report before the team day
A one day team session
This activity isn’t to call you out on areas that you’re not doing so well in. It’s about understanding the preferences across the team for different types of work, and using your new shared knowledge to ensure that if there are gaps (i.e. that one area of work that no-one in the team really enjoys doing most) then you can put strategies in place to make sure your team can thrive.
