Voice recordings can often become key evidence in criminal investigations. The growing availability of recordings means it is increasingly important that this evidence is handled appropriately and comparisons are carried out using tested and validated methods. In this two hour online workshop, attendees will be provided with an introduction to forensic speaker comparison (FSC), the most common forensic examination undertaken by speech and audio practitioners.

The workshop will provide participants with:

  • An introduction to forensic speaker comparison 
  • Current methodological practice
  • Ongoing developments within the field
  • Current regulation and standards for this discipline

Course Overview

The workshop will take place online from The University of York. The course will provide an introduction to forensic speaker comparison. The workshop will involve lecture style content and opportunities for discussion. 

Note: This course is not intended to provide attendees with the skills and knowledge to carry out forensic audio analysis. It is intended to raise awareness and give an understanding of how audio can be used as evidence.

Tutors

Jessica Wormald

Jessica is a lecturer in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York. Her primary research interests are in forensic speech science and sociophonetics. Jessica is interested in research which leads directly to improvements in forensic practice, particularly methodological developments and the combination of auditory, acoustic and automatic techniques. She previously worked as a forensic consultant at J P French Associates where she carried out speaker comparison and transcription casework.
