Jia Chai will talk about her recent composition project A musical painting of Lingnan --- Su Dongpo. Jia has been awarded the Chinese National Arts Fund 2022 Young Composers Scheme with this project which consists of five ensemble pieces. Her lecture will include reflections on her work on her fusion of Chinese cultural heritage and Western musical techniques. Jia will also be considering the need for interdisciplinary approaches that allow for a great combination of the Chinese language and music in a proper way.

About the speaker

Jia Chai

Jia Chai is an Chinese composer and she gained a PhD in Composition from University of York (2018)where she studied with Ambrose Field, Roger Marsh and Martin Suckling. Currently, Jia lectures in music and dance Conservatory at Zhuhai College of Science and Technology, Guangdong(China). Recently, Jia has been awarded the Chinese National Arts Fund 2022 Young Composers Scheme 2022. She has also been awarded the Nicola Lefanu Composition Prize (2018); the Terry Holmes Composer & Performer Award (2018); Composer for York Late Music Centre (2018); Composer for Chen Qigang躬耕书院workshop(2019); and the New Dots project funded by Britten foundation (London). She has collaborated with performers and ensembles including: James Willshire (UK), Karin De Fley (Belgium), Carla Rees (London), Psappha Ensemble, New Dots (London), alle bilder (Berlin), Ligeti String Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, Kreutzer Quartet, juice, the 24, and Chimera among others. Jia has been also appeared in festivals around Europe like the HighScore Contemporary Music Festival (Italy), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), and she has participated in masterclasses with Julian Wolfe and Judith Weir.
