HFACT | PRICELESS South Africa

HFACT is a five-year project funded by the NIHR that aims to answer the question, “How can countries’ health financing and resource allocation strategies be strengthened to accelerate the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) objectives, with particular attention to left-behind groups?”

The Unit aims to

  • produce policy-relevant, actionable research which addresses major health financing challenges
  • to strengthen health economics research capability to aid decision-making
  • to strengthen and develop coalitions with policymakers, civil society partners and the public
  • to engage international organisations, stakeholders and policymakers to uptake in UHC.

The project focuses on the four low- and middle-income countries of Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa. Further information on the project can be found on the HFACT website.

The UoY project partner in South Africa is PRICELESS SA (SAMRC/WITS Centre for Health Economics & Decision Science). Research activities to date have included:

  • Investigating the cost of financing HIV services for migrant pregnant mothers in South Africa
  • Modelling the potential impact of a tax on fruit juice in South Africa and its implications for type 2 diabetes and health financing
  • Investigating benefits under the South African National Health Insurance scheme.
  • Costing of prostate cancer treatment based on clinical guidelines.
