Bold Reynard must die? A study of Lakeland Hunting Songs: a living tradition at risk.
This seminar seeks to give an overview for my PhD research on The Hunting Songs of the Lakeland Fell Packs.
These songs are part of a living tradition which, until now, has not been subject to academic investigation. I will chart the tradition’s development from its roots in the late eighteenth century to its perceived current decline, as well as exploring why these songs exist, who sings them, my relationship to the tradition and, perhaps most importantly, asking: what is a Lakeland Hunting Song?
Prepare to be plunged into a world of long, drunken nights, Cumbrian dialect and enthusiastic audience participation.
Mary Emmett is a PhD candidate in the Department of Music at the University of York.
