Academic education
We have developed the first MSc module dedicated to the safety assurance of robotics and autonomous systems - Advanced Topics in Safety.
It is a ten-credit module for the University of York’s MSc in Safety-Critical Systems Engineering and can be studied as part of the MSc or as a standalone topic.
This module is an opportunity for you to broaden your systems engineering knowledge with an insight into the challenges to safety processes and product safety brought about by the introduction of autonomous systems.
The course runs again in April 2023 and registration closes on 3 April 2023.

Completing the Advanced Topics in Safety CPD module and learning in detail about SACE/AMLAS has proved incredibly useful in developing systems that aren't completely managed by more conventional system safety approaches. Working in a modern R&D environment i've found the content of the course essential, especially for identifying the limits of more classical safety approaches, as well as taking view of possible future safety challenges, their causes and possible ways to mitigate them.
Phillip Mulvana - Lead Technologist: Safety Engineering
The course is taught as a mixture of self-study material and three days of class-based work. Extra material is provided for additional self-study after the days in York.
Pre-attendance self-study
Self-study material gives an overview of the current state-of-the-art in system safety to ground our later discussions.
It then considers technical background, such as sensor suites, perception and decision-making. It will also introduce a discussion on the societal and ethical implications of Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS).
In-person lectures
The timetable for in-person lectures is split into six sessions:
- Session 1: Introduction to safety and security assurance challenges posed by RAS
- Session 2: RAS software and verification of machine learning (ML)
- Session 3: Safety assurance of RAS in complex environments
- Session 4: Assurance of ML in autonomous systems
- Session 5: Human factors for RAS
- Session 6: Risk acceptance and conclusions
Post-attendance self-study and assessment
There is lots of ongoing work in this area so will direct you to further reading materials to consolidate your understanding of where this is leading. Further self-study lecture material will be made available and assessment is also available.
