BioArCh visits Malton School

A York associate lecturer visited Malton School to hold a workshop demonstrating the use of science in everyday taks and jobs.

 

Alice Toso, from the Department of Archaeology, conducted an activity called "Uncovering past human diets (and other archaeological superpowers)", which was designed to teach students how stable isotopes of C and N work and can be measured in human bones to reconstruct past diet and identities. The students also built their own isotopic-diet bracelet and were therefore able to see and read each other's diet.

 

The event was organised by NYBEP at Malton School and funded and supported by Sirius Minerals. The aim was to involve 6 local primary schools in STEM and to show in a number of workshops how sciences are used in everyday tasks and jobs. They had a number of local business and organization participating spanning from a Cosmodone by the Department of Physics, a Gas Turbine by the Royal Navy, Learn to Weld by Derwent Training Association, An introduction to Osteology by BABAO, Construction by Roberston Construction, Gas Robots by Northern Gas networks and Gritting the road by Ringway.
