While working in catering and the fire service, I pursued my academic interests through distance learning with The Open University. I completed undergraduate modules in energy and sustainability, and mathematics (I also completed a humanities module). During this time, I developed a fascination with the processes of learning mathematics and an appreciation for the challenges involved. Following these studies, I completed a Beng in Civil Engineering from Southampton University.
I have also spent time working for a large civil engineering contractor at Heathrow Airport. With a desire to share my knowledge and to help others develop theirs, I was inspired to complete a PGCE in secondary science with mathematics. After graduating I worked in UK secondary schools where I obtained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), specialising in mathematics. I now work as part of a team with focus on designing and delivering mathematics and statistics modules at the International Pathway College at The University of York.
Throughout my career in education, I have been interested in utilising modern technology to enhance the learning experience. In 2022, as part of my continued professional development, I obtained CMALT accreditation through successful submission of a portfolio titled ‘Using technology to enhance engagement in both; classroom and blended learning scenarios’.
In addition to this, I have designed a variety of digital resources which are integrated into our modules, some of which I created using the online mathematics assessment platform Numbas. To further my pedagogical understanding of the developments in digital learning, I completed a postgraduate certificate in Online Teaching. As a believer in lifelong learning, I’m pursuing my interest in the environment through part-time study, working towards an MSc in Environmental Management. I am also an associate lecturer for The Open University, delivering on undergraduate modules in energy and sustainability, and business data analytics.
