Module design, management, teaching and assessment of Social Sciences and Politics at both Foundation and Pre-masters level.

Professional Interests

My educational interest is in widening participation for access to higher education and the improvement in social mobility for people in both the UK and at International level; through educational opportunities and achievement. Also I seek to improve the learning and teaching of critical analysis for my students.

External Activities

I am involved in Local, Regional and National forums, that seek to improve educational provision, opportunities and social mobility in the UK. I am a brass musician playing the trumpet and cornet in a North-East Brass Band that represented the North-East at the UK National Brass Band Championships in September 2017.

Further Information

Before I came to the IPC, my teaching experience has been in secondary schools in Northern England and a Tutor for the Open University. I have been Head of a Humanities and Citizenship department and have mentored NQT teaching staff and delivered CPD to teachers.

Also I was the school Lead member in the ‘Durham schools and Further and Higher education government funded project’; this project aimed at getting students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds into Further and Higher Education. At the end of the 3-year project, I gave a presentation to a regional conference at Durham University.

My last teaching post was as a teacher with Durham Educational Support services, teaching pupils who had educational health needs. I have a BA (Hons.) in Social Sciences, MA in Education (Open University), PGCE (Leeds University) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in the Pedagogy and Teaching of Citizenship (Newcastle University/DfES). I successfully completed the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children’s Services 'Leadership at All Levels Programme' in Educational management. While living and working in Durham, I was a volunteer with the Durham Christian Partnership, Citizens Advice Bureau advisor and Research and Campaigns coordinator. I am a qualified RFU rugby coach of a treble County Cup winning youth team.
