GTA Microteaching

Would you like to practise your teaching as a GTA in a ‘safe space’ and get supportive, constructive feedback? This workshop will help build your confidence in teaching in an enjoyable way.

In this Academic Practice-led workshop, you’ll teach a small group of your GTA peers. It’s a low-stakes context in which to try things out and receive helpful comments and feedback (not an ‘assessment’ of your teaching).

What does it involve?

The workshops are typically in-person and on-campus: each person will teach a 15-minute session to the others in the group, who will be their ‘students’.

Each person’s session is then followed by reflection, feedback and discussion, helping develop your learning and teaching skills.

What to teach

You may choose any topic, academic or non-academic:

  • assume your ‘students’ are non-specialists in the topic
  • the overall aim is for a focus on learning (not simply a presentation)
  • use whatever teaching/learning materials you think are appropriate to helping your students learn

How to prepare

Reviewing what you learned in the Introduction to Teaching and Learning training will be helpful preparation.

How to sign up

  1. Make sure you have completed the Introduction to Teaching and Learning first.
  2. Sign up on the booking form (bookings close two weeks in advance to allow preparation time). We’ll contact you to let you know whether you have a place, and keep a waiting list if fully booked.

If there is no upcoming workshop, we’ll keep you on a waiting list for the next date.

If you have a particular learning need, or are a distance PGR and cannot attend in person, please note this on the booking form.
