Paul Mellon Spring 2024 Grants and Fellowships for research in the field of British Art and Architectural History

Categories of funding on offer are:

Junior Fellowships The Fellowship is an award of £8,000 to cover a period of three months. These Fellowships are designed for applicants who are advanced in their doctoral research and need to have an extended period of archival or library research in the United Kingdom. 

Postdoctoral Fellowships The Fellowship is an award of £15,000 to cover a period of six months. They are designed for applicants who have had their doctoral theses successfully examined within the five years prior to January 2024. 

Mid-Career Fellowships The Fellowship is an award of £18,000 to cover a period of four months. They are designed to release Fellows from teaching and/or other employment responsibilities and provide them with a defined period of four months to devote to research for an article, book, exhibition or catalogue.

Senior Fellowships The Fellowship is an award of £60,000 to cover a period of 12 months. They are designed to release Fellows from teaching and/or other employment responsibilities and provide them with a defined period to devote to writing or research. 

Rome Fellowship  Every year one Rome Fellowship is offered to allow an individual the unique opportunity to undertake three months of dedicated research and work on a visually focused topic relating to cultural contact, exchange and influence between Britain (including its historical Empire and Commonwealth) and Italy, whilst being based at the British School at Rome (BSR).

Research Support Grants The Grant is an award of up to £2,000 towards the expenses incurred in visiting collections, libraries, archives or historic sites within the United Kingdom or abroad for research purposes. Open to scholars already engaged in research involving the study of British art or architectural history.

Event Support Grants The Grant is an award of up to £3,000 towards the practical expenses incurred in hosting lectures, conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars for scholars or provided at a scholarly level for the general public.

We have also launched the third round of our New Narratives award. New Narratives is a set of funding opportunities designed to increase the diversity of perspectives among scholars within the field of British Art History. The New Narratives scheme particularly welcomes applications from those who are under-represented within the academic field of the humanities in the UK.

Categories of funding on offer are:

MA/MPhil Studentship This is a one-year academic studentship, specifically designed to support an individual whilst undertaking and completing a MA or MPhil in the area of British art history. A single payment of £32,000 will be allocated to the successful applicant, in the September of the year they are undertaking their MA or MPhil programme.

Doctoral Scholarship This is a Doctoral Scholarship to be awarded to a UK-based student embarking on doctoral studies in the field of British art history. This scholarship is an award of £32,000 per year for three years, and is designed to cover university fees and living costs.

Early Career Fellowship This is a two-year PMC Early Career Fellowship to be granted to an early career researcher working in the field of British art history. The fellowship is an award of £35,000 per year for two years and is designed to cover the living and sustenance costs of undertaking research in the field of British art history.
