These two documents make up a mapping from memory exercise on the structure of DNA. Students work in groups and have a black-and-white copy of the template (1). The teacher has the completed coloured form (2). One of the studens looks at the coloured copy for 15 seconds and then returns to the template to discuss/transfer the information for 45 seconds. This is repeated seven more times. The exercise is good for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learner.A follow-up question for the students would be the typical 4-mark examination item, "Describe the structure of DNA.

This answers without questions will allow you to gauge students’ understanding of formulae of ions and oxidation numbers. One student in a pair writes the questions for the top part of the sheet and the other for the bottom part. They then ask each other their questions and see if they come up with a valid answer. I would quickly go over this. Include how charge relates to group and ions to learn.

In this type of equation card sort, students select the ionic equations, half-equations and neither (stoichiometric?). Reinforce the differences. Ionic equations have no spectator ions in them, half equations have electrons in them. These could be further classified as oxidation and reduction.

These two documents are based on an idea from a course called Active Assessment and consider the feasibility of reactions. Students worked in 2/3s and were given the word document and the words/phrases on cards. It did generate a lot of discussion. Students were asked to put their sentences on OHP transparency strips so the whole class could look at them after small group discussion. It led to consideration of what the ideal answer might look like and the careful use of scientific terminology.
