Project overview

As part of the university’s commitment to upgrading some of its current accommodation at the same time as developing brand new rooms, the Derwent P accommodation block will undergo an £8m refurbishment creating new facilities for students.

As well as bringing the block up to the latest fire and electrical standards, the project will refurbish current student bedrooms and kitchens across three floors as well as creating additional bedrooms from existing offices. There will be 57 ensuite bedrooms and six kitchen areas as well as a number of new social areas, which were not available in the original accommodation.

The refurbishment will also include replacement of the flat-roof covering, replacement of 1990s UPVC windows with higher quality, aluminium double-glazed units, asbestos removal and conservation of the stairwells.

When?

Work began on the project in early 2023 and is anticipated the project will be complete by early 2024 with students using the accommodation from spring that year.

How will this affect me?

There may be some additional noise and disruption around the block as we carry out the work but we do not expect this to be particularly significant.
