York Gender and Violence Research Network

Feminist activists and scholars have been working on issues of gender and violence for decades, and have achieved considerable gains. Yet long-standing forms of gendered violence persist, as social, economic, and cultural changes (for example developments in technology) generate ever new forms.  

Against that backdrop, this network builds  on the wealth of multi-/interdisciplinary research, teaching, and activism on gender and violence – broadly conceived – here in York. It therefore brings together scholars, postgraduate students, activists, practitioners, and partner organisations working on the topic.

The network functions as: 

●    An information point (for those seeking to know more about other scholars/activists, events, publications, projects, and teaching on the topic)
●    A forum for organising events
●    A place to bring together scholars, activists, and practitioners to collaborate on research bids, impact generation, knowledge exchange, and further projects 

Recognising the importance of multi-/interdisciplinary and non-siloed approaches to the topic, we embrace approaches from across the Arts and Humanities, the Social Sciences, and beyond. We are committed to addressing issues of gender and violence in expansive ways, taking in forms of violence from across the ‘continuum’: from direct, physical, ‘political’, and ‘hot’ forms of violence to ‘slow’, structural, symbolic, and epistemic forms, as well as their interrelations/entanglements.

Who is the Network for?

Based at the University of York’s Centre for Women’s Studies (CWS), the network is open to scholars, activists, and practitioners working on the broad topic of gender and violence from across the Arts and Humanities, the Social Sciences, and beyond, who are based in York (and Yorkshire in the case of activists and practitioners).
