Phil Martin: Associate Lecturer

Area(s) of Responsibility

  • Programme Leader for Pre-Masters: preparing international students for postgraduate level study
  • Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes and AI Awareness

Professional Interests

My current interest is looking at the impact and institutional responses to generative AI in language teaching and education generally. A big part of my role is delivering an AI awareness course to postgraduates as part of our Language and Study Skills provision.

By night I become the TELSIG events coordinator. I write and produce a podcast on Technology Enhanced Learning, where I hold discussions with experts on topics such as AI, virtual reality and e-learning. I also host regular webinars on technology enhanced learning which are attended by teachers, researchers and learning designers from a wide range of contexts and countries.

I present regularly at conferences on topics around blended learning, and my most recent publication promotes the idea of using learning technology to streamline classes and make them more student centred. I have previously published in areas of e-learning, academic identity and corpus linguistics. I hold CMALT accreditation and Senior HEA Fellowship.

Before working in higher education, I taught English in Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Japan and South Korea.

External Activities

I’m part of the steering group for the White Rose branch of the Association of Learning Technology.
